Do you have to know what you're talking about to be persuasive?

Sometimes, when I'm doing my couple of miles around the trails, I forget to plug in my tunes and so I find myself wondering about this and that.

Like today for instance. As I regretted wearing my long pants instead of my shorts I recalled during the course of my life that some people are naturally charismatic.

Like you do, when contemplating trousers.

They attract attention just by walking in the room (charismatic people, not trousers) and even if they don't know what they're talking about, they seem to ooze an authoritativeness that is hard to resist.
You just find yourself wanting to believe what they say, while you drift to their corner.

Some people are sticklers for the facts.
If they aren't naturally persuasive, and they're up against a charismatic person in an argument in a room full of people, they pretty much won't stand a chance.
Facts by themselves rarely seem to cut it.
And nobody else ever remembers them anyway.

When someone believes wholeheartedly in what they say it adds conviction to their point of view, regardless of the facts.

So who's more persuasive?
A: The charismatic character with great conviction who is dead wrong based on the facts?
B: Or the whiney factually correct person who happens to be right?

The ideal I suppose is A+B minus whiney=unstoppable

Of course this charisma effect requires people actually talking together in person.
So then I wondered this...

Does the digital age level the charisma playing field, as more interactions are perceived purely in the narrative voice inside the head of the reader (not including tv or teleconferencing)?

And is it possible to 'learn' charisma? Can it be faked? Or is it just a quality that is inborn and impossible to develop from scratch later?

What makes some people just expect to be listened to, and they are, because it's always been that way for them?

Next time I'm taking my headphones.

Oh, and since this is technically an art blog, here's a couple of pics of 'The Dreamer'...

A bronze bunny, a cool sign, and a light dusting of snow...

Maxwell chilling at Rabbit Junction
Here's what happens when a bronze bunny called Maxwell collides with a cool sign and a light dusting of snow...I imagine the last snow we'll get since I noticed some lizards out running about on our wall today.
It's funny how the weather changes in New Mexico, every time you turn around.
Maxwell indoors, where it's warmer

New cafepress shop, ravens and crows...

Raven and moon design in my new cafepress store, www.cafepress.com/ravensandcrows
I got a check from CafePress.com the other day.
I forgot I had ever put stuff up on their site, but a check has spurred me on to make some use of a whole bunch of raven silhouette paintings I made from sketches from video footage (so there's 2 rounds of translation to give them a little bit of style).

I had other things planned for them (still do), but I blew the cobwebs off a few of them (I did a whole bunch) and had a bit of a blast.

Cafepress is a fun way to put your tee shirt (etc) design skills out there, on all sorts of things, and there's always the chance of making $25 every few years!

Here's a few more...

Entries are now closed for my guess the future weight (Aug 1st 2012) of the chubby artist (me) contest.
All bets are in, now we'll just have to let time run its course.

It seems that the combination of my very own austerity fridge, and a chart for weekly visual feedback is doing the trick!
I'm going to try and slide under the bottom guess (which is 180 lbs), but we'll see, eh!
Here's my chart so far...(where it says  '3 month goals' it should be '12 week goals')
Chubby artist contest chart as of March 3, 2012
The winner of the blog portion (mention my contest in your blog to enter a draw for a winged angel mouse) has been won by Nancy Vance.
Congratulations Nancy!
I'll send you a winged angel mouse when they are back from the foundry (unless you want a non-winged mouse, in which case I can send you one now).
